Question 1 : What will be the concrete results of the project ?

The concrete results of the project will be in particular the following.

A support to the RPA and LEPAs of the Region West on all their field of work:

  • The preparation of Regional and Local action plan for the Environment
  • The protection of air quality
  • The control of waste
  • The control of Industrial pollution and risks (IPPC and SEVESO Directives)
  • The monitoring of Environmental Impact Assesment of new plans, projects and constructions
  • The control of chemicals dangerous for the environment

The preparation of numerous pilot tools for all Romanian REPAs and LEPAs in the field of nature protection and of the implementation of the network of Natura 2000 sites:

  • The definition of a strategy for managing this network of sites
  • The definition of methods for the monitoring of sites and of natural species and habitats
  • The preparation of methodological tools for helping the managers of sites
  • The preparation of management plans for 5 pilot sites (which will be twinned with sites in France)

Question 2 : What is Natura 2000 ?

Natura 2000 is a European network of sites defined and proposed by each Member State aiming to preserve the species and the habitats threatened endemic or representative for the European biological diversity.
The Natura 2000 network is composed of:

  • Special Protection Areas (SPA) designated according to the Council Directive 79/409/CEE regarding the preserving of wild birds (``Birds``Directive) for the species listed in Annex 1.
  • Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) designated according to the Council Directive 92/43/CEE regarding the preserving of natural habitats, wild fauna and flora listed in annex 1 and 2 of the Directive.

Each Member States defines its Special Protection Areas and its Special Areas of Conservation as well as the methods for the sustainable management of the natural habitats and of wild flora and fauna.

As all other European Countries already made, Romania has to propose Natura 2000 sites on its teritory.The list of sites proposed by Romania will be delivered to the European Commission at the latest by the day Romania enters the European Union.

The two Directives that represent the base of Natura 2000 network are the European contribution to the implementation of the Rio Convention on biological diversity.
